Aaron Arvelo

Youth Council, Avenues for Justice

Aaron is an exceptional young leader whose resilience, dedication, and commitment to his community make him highly deserving of the Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award. At just 18 years old, Aaron has already balanced the responsibilities of being a full-time father since the age of 15 while continuing to pursue his personal, educational, and professional goals. He is currently working toward obtaining his GED, which he is expected to receive by June 2026, demonstrating his determination to build a stable and successful future for himself and his daughter.

Aaron has been deeply involved in community leadership through Avenues for Justice’s Leadership Council (AFJ), a youth-led initiative focused on leadership development, teamwork, public speaking, and civic engagement. Through this program, Aaron helped organize and host events at our community center, consistently stepping up as a role model and mentor to younger participants.

In addition, Aaron made history as Avenues for Justice’s very first intern. AFJ’s internship program operates three times per year and provides young people with meaningful work experience over the course of eight weeks. During his internship, Aaron supported AFJ’s communications efforts by creating photos and videos for social media, special events, and celebrations. His creativity and dedication helped showcase the voices and accomplishments of young people within our program.

Outside of AFJ, Aaron continues to demonstrate a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He currently works for a local Brooklyn clothing company, Real Snow Milk, while also collaborating with a close friend to organize community events in their neighborhood. Most recently, they coordinated a free Easter celebration for neighborhood children, bringing families together through games, activities, and community engagement.

Aaron is also actively preparing for long-term career success. He has earned multiple certifications, including OSHA, Site Safety, Flagger, and Scaffolding certifications, and recently signed up for an interview opportunity with the Horticultural Society of New York as he continues exploring career pathways.

Despite the many responsibilities and challenges he has faced at a young age, Aaron consistently demonstrates maturity, leadership, compassion, and a genuine commitment to uplifting those around him. He represents the very spirit of youth public service and continues to inspire both his peers and the broader community through his perseverance and dedication.
