COLUMBUS, OHIO—On Monday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine must sign or issue line-item vetoes on the state’s multibillion dollar budget proposal recently passed by the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate.
Children’s Defense Fund-Ohio State Director Dr. John Stanford released the following statement urging DeWine to act in the interest of Ohio’s children and young people:
“This budget sends a clear message to Ohio’s children and families: you are not the priority. At a time when families are struggling to access childcare, health coverage, poverty relief, and safe housing, lawmakers have chosen to deliver tax breaks to the wealthy and handouts to stadium developers. This budget robs children of their chance to grow up with dignity, hope, and joy.
“Governor DeWine still can ensure this is not the final word. We urge him to use his veto pen to protect what matters most: children and families. That means preserving continuous Medicaid coverage for babies during the most critical years of development, safeguarding access to SNAP for families facing food insecurity, and rejecting provisions—like the trigger language—that would limit Ohio’s ability to respond to future federal Medicaid changes. Finally, we call on him to veto the flat tax giveaway to the wealthy, which drains resources from the services working families rely on.
“We need to put children first and show Ohioans that we still care about our future.”
