SAINT PAUL, MN—This week, Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota (CDF-MN) will host “A Celebration of Joy” at the Minnesota Children’s Museum to recognize 40 years of the state office’s advocacy on the behalf of children and youth in the state.
On August 21, attendees will have the opportunity to explore a gallery at the museum showcasing CDF-Minnesota’s history. The event will also celebrate the contributions of youth advocates who have helped drive meaningful change for youth. Dianne Haulcy, Assistant Commissioner of Early Childhood at the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, and Nicole Hernandez, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, will both be honored as CDF-MN Advocates for Joy in recognition of their youth advocacy.
For the first time, CDF-MN will honor a local young person with Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel Halperin Youth Public Service Award in recognition of their dedication to supporting youth affected by systemic inequities. Originally launched in 2015 by the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF)—which was acquired by CDF in 2023, the award honors the legacy of AYPF founder Samuel Halperin. This year, CDF-MN will present Neah Logan with the award.
The event will also feature a performance from the group, Heart and Soul Drum Academy, featuring scholars from CDF Freedom Schools® partner site, Friendship Academy.
CDF-MN State Director Alisha Porter said the event will focus on building beloved community in the organization’s fight to advance child well-being across Minnesota.
“The local leaders and youth advocates who have committed themselves to addressing the specific needs of Minnesota’s children, youth, and families are committed servants to our vision of a state where every child in Minnesota can grow up with dignity, hope, and joy,” Porter said. “We cannot wait to celebrate their contributions to this important effort during our Celebration of Joy on August 21. Every child in our state deserves to thrive and these are just some of the people who work to make that possible.”
