Gloria Batts is a Huntsville, Alabama, native and co‑founder of Village of Promise (VoP), a Family Advancement Center established in 2011 with childhood friend Bobby Bradley to address the needs of children and families in high‑poverty Northwest Huntsville neighborhoods.
Batts grew up in a close‑knit African American neighborhood in Huntsville that valued education and community. Her parents, hardworking and committed to her success, enrolled her in St. Joseph’s Mission School (now Holy Family Catholic School) when Catholic missionaries came to the area in the 1950s to serve African American children. This early emphasis on academic and non‑cognitive skills laid the foundation for her later work in education and community development.
While her professional background includes business ownership and social work, her most significant contribution has been through VoP. The organization provides a continuum of services from early childhood through sustainable careers, aiming to empower families to advance out of poverty. Over the years, VoP has impacted more than 300 families, with current service to 165 families. It has been recognized with awards such as 2023 Nonprofit of the Year and the 38th Annual Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards.
Batts remains active in Huntsville’s civic and community life, serving on the VoP Board of Directors and mentoring entrepreneurs and high school seniors. She is also involved with local organizations such as the Huntsville Botanical Garden Foundation and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Foundation.
Her work reflects her own upbringing—a blend of strong community values, educational commitment, and faith—and demonstrates how personal history can inspire transformative community change. Through VoP, Gloria Batts has helped turn her childhood neighborhood into a model for family advancement and poverty reduction in Huntsville.
