LOS ANGELES, CA – Children’s Defense Fund-California (CDF-CA) announced Tuesday that Rosa Cabrera has joined the organization as its new legislative and advocacy director. Rosa, who has significant experience directing policy advocacy campaigns and working on behalf of communities of color, will lead CDF-CA’s policy team statewide and be the advisor on child-centered legislative and advocacy matters.

“We are extremely excited to have Rosa join Children’s Defense Fund-California,” said Executive Director Shimica Gaskins. “Her experience, knowledge and passion for advancing policies that improve the lives of some of our most vulnerable populations is both impressive and admirable. She is a great addition to our team and expect she will elevate our work as we continue to advocate for local and statewide solutions to make sure all children have the opportunity to succeed.”
Rosa is also excited to join CDF-CA’s team of 16 staff members split between offices in Los Angeles and Oakland. Rosa will work out of the Oakland office.

“I could not be more grateful to join this amazing team,” she said. “Over the last several years I have admired the incredible work that CDF-CA has accomplished on behalf of children, and am now incredibly lucky to work alongside them as their colleague. I’m looking forward to fighting to ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential and thrive in the communities that envelop them.”

Rosa comes to CDF-CA from PolicyLink where she co-managed the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color and led their criminal justice and police accountability work. Prior to that she was the legislative director at PICO California where she worked closely with Attorney General Kamala Harris’ office as part of a statewide grassroots coalition during the national housing mortgage settlement, walked from Sacramento to Bakersfield to urge Congress to pass a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country, and successfully co-led the passage of AB 953, a historic piece of legislation that requires law enforcement officials to collect data on racial and identity profiling.

Rosa, who holds a Juris Doctorate and Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Davis, also has 10 years of experience as a labor organizer through her work with the United Farm Workers, SEIU and the California Nurses Association. Following law school, she worked on one of the first post-9/11 discrimination cases in the nation during her time at Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in San Francisco. Rosa is a proud board member for the California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice and Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice. In her free time, she loves to travel, is a wine enthusiast and loves hiking.
