WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Children’s Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman released the following statement regarding Secretary of Health and Human Services-designate Kathleen Sebelius’ upcoming Senate confirmation hearing:

“Secretary-designate Kathleen Sebelius is a strong nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, and her history as a health care reformer will help her address the litany of challenges facing our nation’s health care system. As Insurance Commissioner of Kansas and then Governor, Sebelius fought to protect Kansas families and made tremendous efforts to improve the health industry.

“Her actions illustrate her longstanding advocacy for America’s working families and an understanding that investing in health care reform, including real health care reform for children, is a crucial part of our country’s economic recovery. I know Secretary-designate Sebelius understands that every step we take to improve the lives of children and working families will strengthen both our economy and our future.”
