Dr. Bert L'Homme
Education Policy Director and lead coordinator for the Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Crusade
Dr. Bert L'Homme is the Education Policy Director and lead coordinator for the Cradle to Prison Pipeline® Crusade at the Children's Defense Fund (CDF). In his role as Education Policy Director, Dr. L'Homme is responsible for developing and implementing CDF's education policy recommendations and serves as lead advocate for enhancing education policy. He will also oversee the Cradle to Prison Pipeline Crusade, which focuses on dismantling the pipeline that funnels tens of thousands of children, especially poor and minority children, down life paths that often lead to arrest, conviction, incarceration and even death. He also serves as one of CDF's lead advocates to improve policies in the areas that underpin the pipeline, including health and mental health, early childhood development, education, child welfare and juvenile justice.
Before joining CDF, Dr. L'Homme most recently held the position of Superintendent for Franklin County Schools in North Carolina. Prior to his role as superintendent, Dr. L'Homme was associate superintendent and principal for a number of school districts in North Carolina, and principal and executive director of City Lights School in Washington, D.C. He also served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant.
Dr. L'Homme holds a Ph.D. in special education/public school administration from the University of Maryland, an M.Ed. in K-12 special education/emotional disturbance from American University, and a B.A. in secondary education/psychology and history from the University of Maryland.
