Each year, through a competitive review process, five deserving Houston-area high school seniors are selected and honored for their academic achievements and perseverance in the face of tremendous and overwhelming obstacles. Each student receives a college scholarship, a laptop computer, professional attire, mentoring, leadership training and other supports from CDF to help ensure their continued success.

On Friday, March 16, 2012 CDF-Minnesota will host its twentieth annual Beat the Odds awards dinner and celebration by honoring four more deserving high school seniors with a $4,000 college scholarship.

Grandparents and other relatives raising children will gather at the U.S. Capitol at noon on September 15th to celebrate what they are doing for children. The program, which will begin at 1:00 pm, will feature kinship caregivers, children, national leaders, Members of Congress and other friends of children and caregivers. After the formal program, caregivers will have the opportunity to meet with their own Senators and Representatives to share facts about children being raised by relatives in their states and districts and the help they need.

The Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry provides five days of spiritual renewal, continuing education, inter-generational movement-building workshops, and networking as Christians from across the denominational spectrum explore how their Christian faith calls them into ministries of child advocacy and guides, shapes, and sustains them in their work with and for children.

Today, 15.5 million children in America live in poverty. Nearly one in four children under the age of five are poor; and over 40 percent of these children are Black. At nine months of age, poor Black children are already behind their higher-income peers in cognitive development; the gap is even wider at 24 months. By kindergarten, poor Black children have to beat the odds to catch up — and as various tests reveal, many never do.
