Knoxville and Clinton, Tenn.
On Sunday June 5th through Saturday, June 11th, the CDF Freedom Schools® program will host over 1,300 young adults at CDF Haley Farm and the University of Tennessee- Knoxville for the 2011 Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute National Training. During this time, site coordinators and servant leader interns will embark on a 7-day experience, starting each day with Harambee and concluding with evening plenary sessions that feature prominent authors, speakers and panelists. Throughout the week, a team of Ella Baker Trainers and auxiliary faculty conduct training on the Intergrated Reading Curriculum for all tracks, and expert consultants lead workshops and seminars. Topics explored include: children’s developmental needs, classroom management, parental engagement, non-violent conflict resolution, community organizing, leadership development and social action. Our sponsor partners cover travel for the site coordinator and servant leader interns and CDF provides lodging, ground transportation, meals and training materials.
Our 2011 national training theme “From Freedom Rides to Freedom Schools” will highlight the heroic work of the Freedom Riders and other everyday citizens who have accomplished extraordinary change in our nation.
In the summer of 2010, CDF Freedom Schools sponsor partners served more than 9,600 children in 84 cities and 29 states. Since 1995, over 80,000 children have had a CDF Freedom Schools experience and more than 9,000 college students, and 2,000 adult site coordinators and project directors have been trained to deliver this empowering model.
