2009 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce that Clinton, Tennessee, has been chosen as the site of the 2009 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture. Walter Dean Myers, renowned author of outstanding fiction, poetry and nonfiction for children and young adults, will deliver the lecture, which will be hosted by the Langston Hughes Library at the Children's Defense Fund Haley Farm with the support of the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences, the University of Tennessee's Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature, the Knox County Public Library and the Clinton Public Library.

The lecture will be held at the CDF Haley Farm on Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Transportation Information

  • Plane & Shuttle
    You are encouraged to make your travel plans early as space may be limited. Book all flights to McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville, Tennessee. The airport is 34 miles or approximately a 50 minute drive from CDF Haley Farm.  Arrange your flight times accordingly. CDF provides round-trip airport shuttle service from McGhee Tyson Airport to CDF Haley Farm or your hotel for a fee of $45. To arrange for this shuttle service, please contact Ericka Dobson at 865-457-6466 or ewright@childrensdefense.org. You may arrange for your own transportation from the airport to your hotel or CDF Haley Farm. The approximate cost of a taxi from the airport to Clinton, TN, is $60. Departures: Allow at least two hours between your departure from the Farm and your flight's departure time. (This includes shuttle schedule and the recommended hour for check-in.)
  • Bus and Shuttle
    There is a Greyhound Bus Station in Knoxville, TN. CDF provides round-trip bus shuttle service from the Greyhound Bus Station to CDF Haley Farm or your hotel for a fee of $45. To arrange for this shuttle service, please contact Ericka Dobson at 865-457-6466 or ewright@childrensdefense.org. Departures: Allow at least two hours between your departure from the Farm and your bus's departure time. (This includes shuttle schedule and the recommended time for check-in.)

Lodging

Each participant is responsible for reserving and paying for hotel accommodations. The following is a list of hotels to assist you with your planning. Please call the hotel directly to reserve your room. 

On the day of the Arbuthnot Honor Lecture, complimentary transportation will only be provided to CDF Haley Farm from the following hotels:

Parking

The event is held at the CDF Haley Farm, but conference parking for the Arbuthnot Honor Lecture is located in the Anderson County High School parking lot at 130 Maverick Circle, Clinton, TN. Complimentary transportation will be provided from the high school parking lot to CDF Haley Farm. The first shuttle will leave from the parking lot at 10:45 a.m.

Food

No food may be brought onto the grounds of CDF Haley Farm. There will be bag lunches (turkey or vegetarian) available for purchase from 11:00 a.m. to noon at a cost of $7.50 per person.
