CDF Official Idol Gives Back Beneficiary
CDF is thrilled to be an official Idol Gives Back 2008 beneficiary. During the special broadcast of American Idol, on April 9, that raised awareness and benefited select U.S. and international charities, CDF Board Member Reese Witherspoon highlighted CDF's work for children. We are immensely grateful to FOX and our longtime friend and Academy Award® winning actress Reese Witherspoon for showing the millions of American Idol viewers nationwide that every step we take to improve the lives of children improves the lives of all of us. As CDF turns 35 this year we could not ask for a better birthday gift!

Shop with Sarah Jessica Parker to Support CDF!
We are excited to announce that actress Sarah Jessica Parker has chosen the Children's Defense Fund as the beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from sales of "Sex and The City: The MovieTM" t-shirts and tank tops. This merchandise is part of Ms. Parker's BITTENTM collection she developed for the national retail chain Steve & Barry's.
The money raised by the merchandise will enable CDF to sustain and expand our work to ensure a level playing field for all children by lifting them out of poverty, protecting them from abuse and neglect, and ensuring access to health care, quality education, and a moral and spiritual foundation to help them succeed.

Today's Youth Are Tomorrow's Child Advocates
Just as CDF works to ensure that today's children grow into healthy, contributing adults, CDF's programs are designed to attract, equip, mobilize and celebrate the next generation of youth as child advocates. In March, five outstanding Texas students who are overcoming tremendous obstacles in their lives while working hard, demonstrating academic excellence, and giving back to their communities were celebrated at the CDF-TX Beat the Odds® Awards Dinner. Earlier this month, young adults participated in a training program where they developed knowledge and skills in chld advocacy at the Youth Advocacy Leadership Training program at CDF Haley Farm in Tennessee. |

Providing Critical Summer and After-School Enrichment
CDF Freedom Schools® programs have provided literacy and cultural enrichment for more than 64,000 children since 1995. Our award-winning model supports children and families in summer and after-school settings focusing on five essential components: high quality reading curriculum, civic engagement and social action, intergenerational leadership development, and nutrition, health and mental health.
Last month, we conducted our annual Orientation and Training Meeting at the historic CDF Haley Farm in Clinton, Tenn., where we trained new CDF Freedom Schools site staff to prepare them for the 2008 Summer when we anticipate serving over 9,000 children through more than 130 program sites that cover more than 25 states and 60 cities!

National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day - May 8
CDF is proud to be a supporter of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, May 8, 2008, a day that raises awareness of effective programs for children's mental health needs, demonstrates how children's mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery and resilience, and shows how children with mental health needs can be helped to thrive in their communities.
This year's national event will highlight how high school youth who receive the services they need are more likely to have positive outcomes such as better grades and higher rates of education, and less likely to have negative outcomes such as involvement with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Learn more about National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day and what you can do to get involved. | | |
