Faith-Based Action

Religious people and organizations — with millions of members, deep roots in communities across the country, a history of caring for children, and moral authority — are indispensable to building a successful Leave No Child Behind® movement.

With our collective voice, followed by concrete action, we do not just make small changes. We change the community. We change the nation. We change the lives and improve the odds for all children.

Join us at CDF Haley Farm for the 23rd Annual Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry from July 17-21, 2017 as we renew our spirits, refocus our vision, and strengthen the movement for all children in America. Register Now.

Opportunities for Study and Action Groups

CDF is pleased to announce a new book, Hope for the Future: Answering God’s Call to Justice for Our Children, by CDF religious affairs advisor Shannon Daley-Harris with a foreword by Marian Wright Edelman.

The publisher, Westminster John Knox Press, writes:

“Whether a parent or pastor, child advocate or Christian educator, professional or volunteer working with children, we yearn for both comfort and challenge, vision and validation, hope and help as we seek to make a difference in the lives of children.

In Hope for the Future, Shannon Daley-Harris draws from over twenty-five years of work with the Children's Defense Fund to offer twelve meditations for those working to create a better world for our children. Each meditation focuses on passages of Scripture and weaves together moving stories of children, startling statistics about the challenges facing children, and inspiring examples from other movements and faithful leaders that came before us. Questions for faithful response after each meditation will prompt further reflection and action.

This inspirational book can be used as a devotional, in Bible study discussion, or during a social action committee's discernment.”

We invite child advocates to use this new resource in monthly study and action groups. Get started now.

Protect Children, Not Guns

Together—with prayer, education, and action—we can help ensure every child a safe start through common sense gun safety laws, strengthened mental health resources, and a commitment to counter the culture of violence. For some, this will build on participation in prior events responding to the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy. For other places of worship, this may be an initial effort to connect faith to action on ending violence against children. Now is the time to lift up the leadership and direction we expect from all our elected officials to join with people of faith and citizens across our nation to work for the peace, safety, and well-being of our children.

The following Faith Community Resources will help you plan any number of activities that are appropriate for you and those you lead:

Thank you for joining with people of faith across America to stand up and speak out from our places of worship to demand that we protect children, not guns.
