Carolina Sosa (2014 Beat the Odds Winner) is the first in her bi-cultural immigrant family to pursue a college degree. She has overcome poverty, a speech impediment, learning English as a second language, fear of public speaking and sexual abuse. Carolina was awarded a Beat the Odds scholarship in 2014 and since has been featured in the New York Times and will enter Georgetown University’s freshmen class this fall. Her two-year-old nonprofit, the Scholar Society, is a program for low-income first generation elementary and middle school students to promote academic excellence, leadership and community involvement. She dreams of a career in public service and hopes one day to be elected to Congress.
