President and Congress Begin Fiscal Showdown
With election season behind us and President Obama remaining in the White House for a second term, Congress returned to Washington this week to begin negotiations on the "fiscal cliff". Last week, President Obama and House Speaker Boehner (R-OH) set the stage for the debate, indicating that both parties were ready to return to work, although Democrats and Republicans still remain far apart on many of the two fundamental issues - raising revenues and spending cuts. President Obama will host a bi-partisan group of members of Congress this Friday at the White House to discuss these issues, and we will continue working to ensure everyone in Washington knows to ‘Be Careful What You Cut’!
CDF has developed Budget Principles to ensure Congress and the Administration are held accountable in the coming months. Download them and share with your friends, family and colleagues. CDF’s President Marian Wright Edelman also wrote about the importance of holding children and the most vulnerable harmless in these negotiations in her Child Watch® Column last week.
