On January 19, the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program hosted a National Day of Service and Social Action at the largest homeless shelter for children and families in the nation’s capital, the D.C. General Emergency Family Shelter. The Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, the See Forever Foundation and Maya Angelou Schools, the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF), D.C. General Emergency Family Shelter, and the Capital Area Food Bank partnered with CDF as part of the President’s call to serve to put the spotlight on the critical need to end poverty in America and the devastating impact it has on children and families.

On November 15th, CDF celebrated five extraordinary high school students who have overcome tremendous challenges to excel academically and give back to their community. Each scholar received a scholarship, college counseling, a laptop computer, and an invitation to join CDF leadership training ladder to help pave the road to college and a successful adulthood.

On December 2nd, 2010, CDF-California hosted its 20th Annual Beat the Odds awards ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel to honor five extraordinary high school students who have overcome tremendous life obstacles including poverty, homelessness, abuse and neglect by adults. Each of this year’s honorees were awarded with a $10,000 college scholarship and a laptop computer.

In December 2008, five Los Angeles area students were awarded Beat the Odds scholarships at an event at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Actress and comedian Jane Kaczmarek emceed the event and speakers included actress and CDF board member Reese Witherspoon, Great Debaters star Jurnee Smollet, actor Greg Grunberg, actress Zoe Saldana, and urban music legend Jimmy Jam. More than 400 guests honored the scholarship award recipients and true stars of the evening—Ayotunde, Sara, Janet, Randolph and Cristal--for their academic and leadership achievements in the face of tremendous adversity.

Capitol File Magazine, Viacom and Jennifer Lopez, in cooperation with an honorary host committee, honored CDF President Marian Wright Edelman at an event at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Ms. Lopez and the event hosts honored Mrs. Edelman's efforts to provide a strong, effective voice for all the children of American who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves. At the reception, Mrs. Edelman spoke about how everyone can step up, take action and make a difference to improve the lives of children and the lives of all of us. "This is America's future," Edelman said. "This is a nation-defining election year. It is crucial children are our top priority."

On July 11, 2008, thousands of children and teens from CDF Freedom Schools sites nationwide participated in CDF Freedom Schools National Day of Social Action. The social action and civic engagement component of the CDF Freedom Schools model teaches youth to engage in community service and social justice advocacy. In 2008, participants took part in a variety of actions including visiting and writing letters to elected officials, joining together for marches and rallies and leading awareness activities in support of health coverage for all children. The thousands of CDF Freedom Schools scholars who participated in the National Day of Social Action provide proof that we can solve this problem if each of us does our part.

In March 2007, CDF joined 18 of the nation's leading religious leaders, representing tens of millions, and 10 families from across the country who struggle every day to meet their children's health needs, many with life-threatening illnesses, to urge Congress to enact the All Healthy Children Act and ensure health coverage for all children. The families from Houston, Austin, New York, Jackson, Miss., and Columbus, Ohio met with some of our country's most prominent faith leaders at a "Children’s Witness" at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, DC to discuss their daily struggles. Two of the families have lost a child in the last few weeks because they could not find a doctor to provide the services they desperately needed or were wrongfully denied health coverage.
