One in 50 teachers today are African-American males. In an effort to raise awareness and increase minorities’ involvement in schools, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited a CDF Freedom Schools® site in New Orleans last week to moderate a roundtable of black and Latino young adults who after serving as interns at a CDF Freedom Schools ® site in their local communities went on to become teachers.

Speaking for Children: Good Citizenship

Dr. Cathy Grace, Director of Early Childhood Development at the Children’s Defense Fund, has produced a series of video segments entitled “Speaking for Children,” which provide tips and strategies for parents and caregivers on the development of young children. Having originally aired on Dr. Grace’s local NBC affiliate, WTVA (Tupelo, Mississippi), the segments will be featured each week on the CDF Early Childhood Development webpage. This first segment focuses on developing good citizenship habits in young children.
