At Founder’s Day celebration, a push to end child poverty

Children’s rights advocate Marian Wright Edelman on Wednesday accepted her second Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal at Monticello’s annual Founder’s Day celebration. During her speech, Edelman called on the audience of about 300 people gathered on the estate’s West Lawn to help end child poverty, which she called “the greatest threat” to the country’s long-term prosperity. “We are not educating all our children to compete in a globalized world,” she said. Edelman is the founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to improving education, health care and career opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
