Norfolk's Freedom School Ends on Happy Note

"Harambee" is a Swahili word meaning "let's pull together," but at the Freedom School held at Jacox Elementary School this summer, it was a joyful salutation to the day consisting of song and dance. Historically, Freedom Schools were associated with the Civil Rights movement and founded in the South as alternative schools for black children. Today, sponsored by the Children's Defense Fund, they are free literacy enrichment and mentoring summer programs serving more than 12,000 students in 29 states.
