Summer Camp for Underprivileged Kids on the Horizon at Stony Brook

A pilot program for children from low-income families will send 50 third-grade kids to a free six-week summer camp at Stony Brook University, according to a report published Monday in Newsday. The program, known as a Freedom School, focuses on reading skills with exposure to science and computers. According to Newsday, it is a program established by the Children's Defense Fund and modeled after the Mississippi Freedom Schools that were established in the 1960s.
