A recent New York Times article described a new ad campaign by the Children’s Defense Fund, titled Be Careful What You Cut. (In the interest of full disclosure and bragging rights: one of my children is now a lawyer for the fund.) One ad shows a photo of a tattooed man in prison, with the face of a young boy, and a dotted cut-out line around that face. The message: don’t cut the kids out of the budget.
