Gift from The Duke Endowment funds new DukeEngage program in the Carolinas; DukeEngage adds 8 new programs for 2012

Duke students will take part in a program that provides children with summer enrichment opportunities in Bennettsville, S.C., thanks to a $174,000 gift from The Duke Endowment of Charlotte, N.C. The gift will fully fund one of the eight new programs to be offered through DukeEngage during the summer of 2012. The Freedom Schools Program—an initiative that dates back to 1964 but was reborn in 1992 under the leadership of Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund – aims to help children fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem and generate more positive attitudes toward learning.
