Day-Care Service Faces Deep Cuts in Mayor’s Budget

Thousands of slots in New York City’s day-care system are expected to be placed on the chopping block Thursday when Mayor Michael Bloomberg releases his preliminary budget proposal. As many as 17,000 slots could be cut throughout the city-run day-care program, according to people familiar with the situation. The service reduction, if enacted, will mostly affect low-income workers, as city-provided child care is mandatory for families on public assistance.
