Census 2000 - State and Local Population by Detailed Age

Below are downloadable tables showing numbers of people living in each state from the 2000 Census. Tables show population by single years of age through age 24, five-year age groups through age 64, and persons 65 and older.

Each file includes the same data for every county, every large city (population over 100,000), and every congressional district in the state. Congressional districts are those based on the 1990 Census.

Files for all races combined are available in 2 formats: plain text (.txt) and comma-separated values (.csv) for use with spreadsheets. The text files range in size from 9Kb to 611Kb depending on the state. The csv files range from 2Kb to 55Kb.

Data for 10 race and ethnic groups are also available. These are in compressed (.zip) form for faster downloading (14Kb to 834Kb when zipped, and 94Kb to 6.7 Mb unzipped). Each state zip file unzips into 10 files, one for each race/ethnic group.
