The Children's Defense Fund held a national Cradle to Prison Pipeline Summit at Howard University, September 25-26, 2007 to address the nationwide crisis and its devastating impact on children, youth and their families, particularly within the Black and Latino communities (summit agenda).
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, Dr. John Hope Franklin, and Dr. Dolores Huerta served as honorary co-chairs of the Summit, which was sponsored by The Casey Family Programs, The Prudential Foundation, and The Freddie Mac Foundation. Among the speakers were CDF President Marian Wright Edelman, as well as Dr. Bill Cosby and Morehouse College President Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, Jr. who underscored the role of families and communities in raising healthy children with an ethic of achievement.
The event brought together several hundred of the nation's most prominent faith and community leaders, child advocates, professionals in early childhood, health and mental health, child welfare and juvenile justice, educators, lawyers and judges, elected officials, foundation representatives, members of the media, parents and youth in a highly interactive dialogue that will explore underlying causes of the pipeline, share promising approaches and develop a plan of action to halt it.
