Maggie Filbrandt, originally from South Haven, Michigan, brought a dose of the Midwest to the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® department this summer. Maggie is a junior at Central Michigan University where she is pursuing a degree in elementary education. Maggie has an eclectic background that includes volunteering at Migrant Farm Worker Camps, campaigning for candidates who prioritize children, and empowering students to go to college through a program called College 101. Her interest in education policy, passion for fighting poverty through education, and desire to contribute to CDF’s tireless efforts to stand for children, led her to apply for a CDF Freedom Schools internship. In the near future, Maggie will continue to advocate for underrepresented children through her work with College 101 and other campus organizations. Upon graduation in 2017, Maggie plans to teach in a high-needs school district where she will spark a love for learning and empower her students to make a difference.
