Mackenzie Cate, originally from Alexandria, VA, is a senior at James Madison University studying Public Health Education with a minor in Substance Abuse Prevention. Mackenzie chose to intern for the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools®, because she has a passion for serving children, which has grown after working at a summer camp program for low-income families for four years as both a Counselor and Site Director. As a child advocate, she hopes to ensure the healthy lifestyles and well-being of all children and to combat child poverty by providing educational programs and direct-service to families. She is grateful for this extraordinary opportunity to be able to serve on the national team and at her local CDF Freedom Schools. After graduation, she hopes to continue as a child advocate for a youth-serving organization and eventually earn her Master’s degree in Social Work.
