A fellow classmate at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health introduced Julia Yao to the Children’s Defense Fund, whose mission is closely aligned with her own: to give every child an equal opportunity to be healthy, safe, and fulfilled. This internship gave Julia the opportunity to dig her hands into issues that guided her to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Practice. While at CDF, Julia worked alongside the policy team on child health legislation related to Medicaid/CHIP and the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. CDF’s call for social justice and equality was unmistakable in the people and their work. Julia will graduate from Columbia in the spring of 2016, and hopes to continue working for an organization like CDF—that through both direct service and political advocacy, is steadfast in seeking care and justice for every facet of every child’s life.
