Jamila Iris Edwards joined the California Office of the Children’s Defense Fund as the Northern California director in June 2011. In this role Jamila serves as CDF’s representative in Northern California, manages the Oakland-based office and staff, and interfaces with CDF’s Southern California office. Jamila also is responsible for CDF’s work on children’s health in the northern part of the state.
Although her career started off teaching sixth grade in her hometown, Jamila has spent the last eight years advocating for better health care and public health policy. Prior to joining CDF, Jamila worked for the statewide trade association representing community clinics and health centers. She led the organization’s work in several different issue areas including Medi-Cal provider issues, oral health and pharmacy programs.
Jamila holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, San Diego. She resides in Oakland with her son, Reile.
